The Future is Bright

Here at FOCUS SHIFT FILMS we’ve had a pretty interesting few days that look to be opening new, and unchartered territories for our aerial abilities. 360 degree films from the air and Oculus Rift and now looking like the next steps in filmmaking, and something that we are about to jump into! This week we met with Martin McCabe of Atticus Digital in Cardiff. These guys specialise in 360 degree filming and Oculus Rift. Some of the things they’ve been doing for clients such as British Airways and EDF Energy look to be amazing stuff! They’ve recently been let down with aerial solutions from another company and have lost opportunities because of it. A fortuitous discussion about aerial with a friend of ours led to her passing on our details to Martin – who was super keen to meet up and find out what we could do! After meeting Martin and having a play with his toys – Oculus Rift downhill skiing amongst them! – we found there’s plenty we can do together moving forward. Atticus Digital are in need of not only aerial filming, but assistance with refining their set ups for 360 filming and have clients who may be in need of assistance with online video delivery and management – all of which we are perfectly set up for! The next steps for us is to get our Big Bird modified to fit AD’s 360 camera rig on and to get out and test it! With YouTube now embracing 360 video this could well be the next step in online video and we are looking to be...

New Aerial Showcase

Over the last few weeks here at FOCUS SHIFT FILMS we have been out with our new modified DJI Inspire – nicknamed ‘Lil Bird’. With our in-house techie Steve offering solutions to the small niggles we’ve found with the Inspire our Lil Bird now flies even better. And, its 4K quality capabilities have allowed us to grab some great footage. Check out our new aerial showcase with some of the locations we’ve visited of late. Enjoy!...

Meet The Team!

In the first of our Meet The Team video blogs we take a look at Luke Andrews. Luke is a BAFTA Cymru nominated director and also an editor, by trade. Luke has worked on over 700 videos that range from client based, training video, promotional videos, documentary and fiction work. His considerable experience with both client based and fiction work puts him in a great position to help deliver a project with story at the centre of the film. Through that story the audience engages with the video and it has a greater impact on those watching. Hear what Luke has to say about his work and career so far in his own words.  ...

Safe Flying on Flickering Myth

Our very own Daniel J. Harris has written an interesting little article about safe flying and what we’ve been up to with our modified DJI Inspire. It’s not as in-depth as Steve’s, but more for those with less techie knowledge. Head over to Flickering Myth to read the full article....

FSF Tech Blog 1 – DJI T600 Inspire 1

Hi and welcome to the first of our FOCUS SHIFT FILMS Tech Blogs! I’m Steve the team techie and from time to time I’ll be bringing you some of our latest technical news and developments. With a 30+ year background in aviation engineering and being a qualified pilot, I’ve been involved with design, build and modification of small fixed wing, rotary wing and multi-rotor aerial platforms since 2008. In this blog I am going to focus on the latest and smallest edition to our fleet… the DJI T600 Inspire 1. The blog is not exhaustive and is aimed at providing some helpful information based on our own knowledge and experience, information available from DJI and where appropriate, input from other experienced online forum contributors. We have had the opportunity to try out and assess the Inspire 1 over the last 2 weeks and put our initial findings up on last week’s video blog. The intention is not to repeat the information here but to go into more depth about the Inspire 1. We’ve had some decent and challenging weather to put the Inspire 1 through its paces and overall it’s proving to be a good all round performer. Underlying this level of performance are a number of important factors that the owner/operator should be aware of as well as a fundamental understanding of the platform, transmitter and DJI IOS/Android app; this is where we hope to provide a useful input. The Basics: Our advice when considering buying and before operating the Inspire would be… This platform is not an all-encompassing aerial solution. It is nicely placed between Phantom and...
